Melatonin dosage guide: 1mg, 3mg, 5mg and 10mg melatonin bottles

Melatonin Dosage Guide: 1mg vs 3mg vs 5mg vs 10mg

Melatonin comes in many strengths, from 1mg all the way up to 10mg, and in several formats: tablets, quick-dissolve tablets, gummies and liquid. If you have ever stood in front of the options wondering which one to pick, this guide is for you. We explain the difference between the common strengths and formats, so you can have a better-informed conversation with your doctor or pharmacist and choose with confidence.

What is melatonin?

Melatonin is a hormone that your body produces naturally when it gets dark. It is involved in regulating your sleep-wake cycle, often called your body clock. Melatonin supplements provide an extra source of this hormone, and in Canada, where most of our products come from, many melatonin supplements are authorised by Health Canada with claims such as helping to reset the sleep-wake cycle and reducing the effects of jet lag.

How much melatonin should I take?

There is no single right answer for everyone. The amount that suits you depends on your needs, your health and how you respond. Here are some general principles:

  • Always follow the label. Every product lists its recommended use for adults. That is your starting point.
  • Higher is not automatically better. A stronger tablet does not necessarily mean better results for everyone. Many people prefer to start with a lower strength and only move up if needed.
  • Talk to a professional. Your doctor or pharmacist can help you choose a strength, especially if you take other medications or have a health condition.

Low strength: 1mg to 3mg

Lower strengths are a popular choice for people trying melatonin for the first time, or for those who prefer a gentle option. They also give you more flexibility, because you can follow the label directions without starting at a high dose. Webber Naturals 1mg and Webber Naturals 3mg both come as quick-dissolve tablets.

Extra strength: 5mg

5mg is our most popular strength. Our best seller, Webber Naturals Melatonin 5mg Easy Dissolve, comes in a bottle of 400 sublingual tablets that dissolve under the tongue. If you prefer gummies, Nature's Bounty Melatonin Gummies provide 5mg per two-gummy serving.

Maximum strength: 10mg and dual action

10mg is the highest strength we stock. Several 10mg products use dual action or timed release technology: one layer releases melatonin quickly, and a second layer releases it gradually over the night. Examples include Adrien Gagnon 10mg Dual Action and Jamieson 10mg Timed Release. Because this is the highest strength, it is especially worth checking with your doctor or pharmacist before choosing it.

Tablets, quick-dissolve, gummies or liquid?

  • Quick-dissolve (sublingual) tablets melt under the tongue, with no water needed.
  • Dual action / timed release tablets release melatonin in two stages.
  • Gummies are easy to chew and a good choice if you dislike swallowing tablets.
  • Liquid comes with a dropper, so you can measure your serving, following the label directions.

When should I take melatonin?

Most product labels recommend taking melatonin at or shortly before bedtime. For example, some of our labels suggest 30 minutes before bed, others 30 to 90 minutes. For jet lag, one of our product labels recommends taking it once a day at bedtime after darkness has fallen while travelling, and at your destination until you adjust. Always check the specific label of the product you buy.

Safety tips from the labels

The labels of the products we sell include warnings like these:

  • Do not drive or use machinery for 5 hours after taking melatonin.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Consult a health care practitioner before use if you take other medications or have a medical condition.
  • For use beyond 4 weeks, consult a health care practitioner.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

10mg is a maximum-strength product intended for adults. Whether it suits you depends on your situation, so follow the label and ask your doctor or pharmacist.

10mg contains twice as much melatonin per tablet. Many 10mg products also use dual action technology. 5mg is our most popular choice.
